PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - 2004/11/02: Heng Phaly, 65, holds her two-year-old grandson David as her daughter Phala, 24, sits in their doorway. All three share a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. For about the last two years, Phala has been HIV+. She was very sick and nearly died before she began a recent medical regimen to prepare her to take ARV drugs.
Phala believes she was infected by her husband, who has left her.. (Photo by Jerry Redfern/LightRocket via Getty Images)
