Illustration depicts former slave Henry Brown (also known as Henry Box Brown, 1815 - after 1889) as he emerges from the box he used to mail himself to freedom, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 24th March, 1849. With the help of a shopkeeper, Brown had himself posted from Richmond, Virginia, to a group of abolitionists in Philadelphia. Witnessing his arrival are prominent abolitionists (left to right) Lewis Thompson (1807 - 1866), James Miller McKim (1810 - 1874), William Still (1821 - 1902) and Charles Dexter Cleveland (1802 - 1869).
