A Yemeni woman hold a picture of a child

A Yemeni woman hold a picture of a child bride during a rally near the parliament in Sanaa on March 23, 2010 to show support to a proposed legislation banning the marriage of girls under 17. The demonstration came two days after thousands of conservative Yemeni women protested against the proposed legislation. Child marriages are common in impoverished Yemen, especially in rural areas, where girls as young as eight are known to have been married off by desperately poor parents.
