Victims of Human Trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - 2014/04/11: A young refugee from Arakan who is a victim of human traffickers. Globally, the majority of trafficking victims are women, but among the Rohingya, this mostly affects males. The Muslim Rohingya ethnic group is traditionally from the state of Arakan in western Burma. After a populist Buddhist party had a majority of supporters, violence erupted in 2012 between Muslims and Buddhists. Hundreds of Muslims were killed and 125,000 were forced into refugee camps. Rohingyas have testified the local police who have actively participated in the violence. The allegations are supported by reports from organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. In late March, several organizations have been established to offer aid to Muslims who have been attacked by Buddhist protestors. A few weeks earlier, the Burmese government MSF was forbidden to operate over the state. The reason given was that the organizations offering aid discriminated against Buddhist by prioritizing the behaved Muslims. Before the violence occurred, about one million Rohingya and three million Buddhists lived in Arakan. (Photo by Jonas Gratzer/LightRocket via Getty Images)
