Smiling, muddy boys ride on the back of a donkey cart through the streets of Djenne. Once a year Muslims gather in Djenné to join in with the replastering of the city's central mosque ( French: 'Crepissage' ), the largest mud building in the world. For one day, men and boys excitedly collect mud (adobe) in small baskets from locations just outside the city and apply it to the walls of the Great Mosque amid a vibrant festival atmosphere.
