With No Vows Or Horses To Graze, Volunteers In Kumamoto Prefecture Set Fire To 30 Hectares Of Field

About 100 volunteers gathered at the edge of the hilly Kusasenrigahama field in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, to set fire to about 30 hectares of dried grass on February 8, 2017, Japan. The controlled brush fire, meant to preserve the area, is a custom that was revived last year after a gap of about 50 years. Cows and horses used to graze on the field, but were prohibited from entering after 2010 as a preventive measure against possible diseases.
