The Brandtaucher ( "Incendiary Diver" ) Submarine constructed by Wilhelm Bauer Brandtaucher. Wilhelm Bauer (23 December 1822 - 20 June 1875) was a Bavarian inventor and engineer who built several hand-powered submarines. Incendiary ships were a well known concept in blockade-breaking. Although Bauer wanted to make several improvements of the submarine, the military ordered a public show on 1 February 1851. Original edition from my own archives Source : Gartenlaube 1863
