Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 - 1375) - Italian writer, poet and important representative of early Renaissance humanism. His main work, the Decameron, which comprises one hundred novellas, portrays the multifaceted society of the 14th century and makes him the founder of the prose narrative tradition in Europe. Halftone print based on a Fresco (c. 1450, transferred to wood, detail) by Andrea del Castagno (Italian painter, 1420–1457) in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, published in 1895.
