At the University of California, Berkeley, physicists examine the new 184 inch atom smashing cyclotron, heretofore secret. In the instruments vacuum chamber are (l to r): Dr. Donald Cooksey, Associate Director of Radiation Laboratory; Dr. E.O. Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron and a major figure in the development of the atom bomb; Professor R.L. Thornton, in charge of cyclotron construction; Professor J.R. Oppenheimer, and William Brobeck. This is the first photo of the cyclotron.
