'British Soldiers Were Seen Fighting Their Way Through The Streets', 1908, (c1920).
British Soldiers Were Seen Fighting Their Way Through The Streets' (1908), from 'Our Empire Story,' by HE Marshall (Thomas Nelsom And Sons, London), c1920. The Siege of Lucknow occurred during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The first siege had lasted 87 days, the second siege a further 61. The sepoys (Indian soldiers) of the East India Company's Bengal Presidency Army had become increasingly troubled, feeling that their religion and customs were under threat from the rationalising and evangelising activities of the East India Company, initiated the rebellion.
