The Railway Station, c 1862.
UNITED KINGDOM - OCTOBER 04: Colour print from the oil painting 'The Railway Station' (1862) by William Powell Frith (1819-1909). Passengers are shown on a crowded station platform, preparing to board a train. Frith became well-known for his detailed modern-life subjects, with engravings after his paintings such as 'The Railway Station' becoming particularly popular and selling in large quantities. Frith achieved financial success with large scale paintings of Victorian scenes, such as 'Derby Day' (1858) and 'Ramsgate Sands' (1854), the latter of which was bought by Queen Victoria (1819-1901). The art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900) hailed Frith's work as the art of the future. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
