UNITED STATES - AUGUST 03: Daily News centerfold page dated August 3, 1978, Roof Collapse Sends Six Firemen to Death in Sea of Flames..., About 20 firemen were trying to cut holes in the roof ot the burning supermarket to let smoke out so other firefighters could enter the building to battle the flames. Then the roof collapsed into a sea of fire killing six of the firemen and injuring dozens more. Hundreds of other firemen worked themselves to exhaustion in frantic efforts to save the trapped men from the smoke and flames. The fire erupted in the supermarket at 8;40 a.m. as crew of about 25 craftsmen worked on a major renovation of the structure at 2892 Ocean Ave. in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn. Workmen and about 15 customers safely evacuated store by time first egines arrived and commanders quickly sounded an all-hands alarm. All four of the city's fire rescue units rushed to scene but efforts to free six men trapped under burning debris proved to be in vain. Blaze was finally brought under control at 12:29 p.m. as firemen's wives and relatives rushed to scene in desperate attempts to learn fate of loved ones.
