Engraving depicting the turbines on the Portrush Railway, Ireland. This was the first railway to be powered by hydroelectricity. The electrical work was carried out under the direction of Sir Charles Siemens. Wooden launder fed water to discharge down near-vertical pipes and through the Alcott turbines which are contained in the spherical iron housings To discharge to waste in the stream below.
