YUGOSLAVIA-KOSOVO-SOLDIER-CONFRONTATION

A French KFOR soldier (C) and a Kosovo Albanian youth (L) stand face to face as fresh clashes erupt with a crowd trying to cross a bridge to a Serbian housing area in Kosovska Mitrovica 09 August 1999. About 150 demonstrators, most of them young, chanting-anti-French slogans, were pushed back by rifle-wielding French soldiers as they tried to force their way across the bridge. The KFOR forces, numbering 55, had earlier come under a hail of stones as they tried to lay barbed wire to seal off the bridge.
