India-Bangladesh Border Fence
TIN BIGA, INDIA - FEBRUARY 2007: It's becoming more usual to build fences against poverty and Islamism. This appears to be what India is doing, building a fence along its border with Bangladesh, one of the poorest country in the world, which is overpopulated given the small size of its territoty. The fence is cutting Bangladeshis off from the rest of the world, without respecting the limits of the establioshed no man's land. The Indian BSF (Border Security Force) totals 40,000 people, who look after the 4000kms of fencing. They are accused of comitting many crimes. Every month, between 20 to 30 Bangladeshis are being killed by the BSF, because they were trying to cross the border illegaly, or where simply too close from the fence. Soon, the fence will be electrified. There are hundreds enclaves on both sides of the fence where the inhabitants caught on the wrong side of the border cannot go back to their country of origin. In Tin Biga, a Bangladeshi enclave within Indian territory, the Indian police has allowed a corridor for the Bangladeshis to use to go from one part of the village to the other.
