Bergen-Belsen Nazi Concentration Camp

BERGEN-BELSEN, GERMANY: Jewish prisoners rescued by British troops who liberated the Belsen Concentration camp, 15th April 1945. The Royal Army Medical Corps, number 11 Light Field Ambulance Brigade, and the 67 Coy American Field Service Unit were tasked with clearing the Belsen Concentration Camp. Brigadier Llewellyn Glyn-Hughes, who was put in charge of cleaning up the camp, said it took a staff of 68 a fortnight to stamp out typhus in the camp. But prisoners too sick to respond to treatment continued to die. The last hut in the camp was burned to the ground on 21st May 1945. The camp commandant, Josef Kramer, was found guilty at Luneberg of war crimes and hanged in December 1945. Today the camp is a landscaped park. (Photo by Popperfoto via Getty Images/Getty Images)
