TOPSHOT-LEBANON-MIDEAST-CONFLICT-ENVIRONMENT-OIL
TOPSHOT - A Lebanese fisherman rows his boat on an oil slick at a small Beirut harbor, 26 September 2006. A thick layer of oil is still crippling a lot of the capital's fishermen more than two months after Israeli warplanes attacked fuel oil storage tanks at the coastal generating station, spilling up to 15,000 tones of fuel into the Mediterranean. The air assaults came after Israel launched its blistering 34-day offensive on July 12 against Lebanese Shiite fighters from Hezbollah, and subsequent fires at Jiyeh burned for nearly two weeks. The slick, described as the country's worst-ever environmental disaster, has polluted an estimated 150 kilometers (93 miles) of coastline.
