On Tuesday, October 15, 2013, Tom Hoerth, Bath City Arborist and Tree Warden, cuts up a felled White Birch in the Butler Head Preserve to increase the sunlight for the Sugar Maples, as part of the community forest management program. Much of the small branches and leaves are stacked into habitat piles that will help small animals find comfort from the winter months and gradually decay into forest compost, according to Hoerth. The trunks are cut into four foot lengths and will be sold for firewood. (Photo by Gordon Chibroski/Portland Press Herald via Getty Images)
