Methuens gallant infantry storming a Kopje at Gras Pan, South Africa, 1899.
SOUTH AFRICA - OCTOBER 14: One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. Many bloody battles were fought for control of the rocky hills known as kopjes which dominated the surrounding countryside of the Veldt. One such was the battle fought between British forces led by Lord Methuen and the Boers at Graspan on November 25th 1899. A combination of artillery bombardment and infantry assault drove the defending Boers off on this occasion. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
