El Ateneo presently occupies the building that belonged to the old Grand Splendid Cinema, built in 1919 by initiative of of Max Glucksman, an Austrian immigrant and designed by architects Per? and Torres Amengo. Its dome was painted by Italian artist Nazareno Orlandi. In 2000, the former movie theatre was reformed to host the most important bookstore in Latin America.
