The Disappearing Berlin Wall

BERLIN - MARCH 23: A protected piece of the Berlin Wall that was saved from being destroyed or carted off to a museum, stands as a memorial in the heart of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz March 23, 2004 in Berlin, Germany. The historic area was a wasteland after WWII and later became a no-man's land that separated East from West. It was only after "the Wende" that the area has been rebuilt becoming once again the heart of the Berlin. Fourteen years after communist East Germany ceased to exist the remnants of the Berlin Wall are quickly disappearing as a united city rushes ahead to erase its past. Though many are happy to see it vanish as a footnote of history, some are trying to preserve it as a monument to a city and its storied past.(Photo by Kurt Vinion/Getty Images)
