During the Indian Mutiny or Great Sepoy Rebellion (1857-1858), Lucknow was under a prolonged siege. Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde (1792-1863) was commander-in-chief of the British forces and relieved the siege. Damage to the building can be seen here. Beato, a Venetian by birth, initially worked as a photographer in England. Around 1854 he began working with his brother-in-law James Robertson, based in Constantinople (Istanbul).
