Myanmar's Nat Festival

TAUNGBYON, MANDALAY DIVISION, MYANMAR - 2009/03/08: A senior medium wearing a ceremonial hat during a blessing ceremony at a shrine containing the statues of brothers Min Gyi and Min Lay, the most revered nats in Taungbyon. Every year in August, hundreds of thousands of people from all over Myanmar (Burma) gather for a week in Taungbyon, a village near Mandalay, to honour the nats - evil spirits who rule every step of the daily life. People believe that their prayers and offerings will bring material happiness and prevent domestic problems. To enter in communication with the nats, they use mediums, mostly members from the gay community.. (Photo by Thierry Falise/LightRocket via Getty Images)
