(Original Caption) 12/21/1946-Kainan City, Japan: A severe earthquake rocked the extensive area covering the Kinki, Chugoku and Shikoku regions on Dec. 21 at 4:20 a.m. In the strong horizontal vibration a huge number of houses were leveled while landslides were caused in Wakayama, Osaka, Hyogo, Tokushima, Kochi and Mie Prefectures causing death and injury. Worst hit was Wakayama Perfecture, where a tidal wave struck the entire coastal aea. Here is shown a flooded area with houses in the background and an umbrella in the foreground.
