Akaroa Businesses Prepare For Visitors To Return As Domestic Travel Is Set To Resume Following Coronavirus Lockdown

AKAROA, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 13: Shamarra Alpaca owners Frank and Anya Walkington pose with their alpacas on May 13, 2020 in Akaroa, New Zealand. Their farm tours will recommence on May 14. Akaroa, located on the Banks Peninsula southeast of Christchurch, is a popular destination for international cruise ships. With international borders closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown measures put in place, the local tourism industry has been at a standstill. With domestic travel allowed to resume as New Zealand further eases restrictions under COVID-19 Alert Level 2, local operators are preparing to reopen to tourists again. New Zealand will move to COVID-19 Alert Level 2 in three stages starting from Thursday 14 May. Domestic travel will resume from Thursday, while restaurants, cinemas, retail, playgrounds and gyms will be able to reopen with physical distancing and strict hygiene measures in place. Gatherings will be limited to 10 people and bookings for restaurants will not be allowed for groups larger than 10. Schools and early childhood centres will open from Monday 18 May while bars will be allowed to reopen from Thursday 21 May. New Zealand is current under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 restrictions, after the country was placed under full lockdown on March 26 in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
