Cristina And Pau Split Liver Transplant 20 Years Ago
BARCELONA, CATALONIA, SPAIN - MARCH 05: Split liver transplant patients Pau and Cristina pose in the Pedro Muñoz Seca Gardens, March 4, 2023, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Cristina Muñoz and Pau Morraja received a split liver transplant at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona when they were 3 and 14 years old, respectively. Split liver transplantation is a surgical procedure by which a donor liver is divided into 2 parts in order to obtain 2 grafts for 2 recipients. Two decades after the operation, the two transplant recipients and their families are still in contact. On the occasion of the 'National Transplant Day', which is celebrated on the last Wednesday of every March, Cristina wanted to appeal to donors: "You have to donate because it gives you a second chance". Moreover, as a liver transplant patient, she assures that the recipients are committed "to live for the people who are no longer there". (Photo By Lorena Sopena/Europa Press via Getty Images)
