Belsen Camp 1 Crematorium, 1945
The Belsen Camp 1 crematorium was built to deal with 3 bodies at a time. It worked day and night between February to April 1945. As the Allies advanced, an attempt was made to tidy up the camp and up to 17,000 victims a day were murdered in the crematorium. Large pyres were built and the smoke from burning bodies rose to 3,000 feet and could be smelt 5 miles away. (Photo by © Hulton-Deutsch Collection/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)
