Germany Celebrates 30th Anniversary Of Berlin Wall
MOEDLAREUTH, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 09: The wall of the former GDR border guard forces at a former fortified border crossing between East and West Germany during celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 2019 in Moedlareuth, Germany. East Germanys communist authorities established a security zone along the border to West Germany beginning in 1954 with the principal aim of preventing people fleeing from East Germany to West Germany. In 1961 they also built the Berlin Wall around West Berlin, which existed as a West German exclave under Allied occupation in East Germany. The opening of the Berlin Wall as well as the border between East and West Germany in 1989 quickly led to the collapse of the East German communist government and the eventual reunification of Germany in 1991.
