Yazidis in Iraqi Kurdistan

DOHUK, REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF KURDISTAN, IRAQ - 2015: These young Yazidi women had been abducted by the Islamic State. Some managed to flee, others were rescued. Of the 5,000 women who were thus taken, 2800 were rescued by a Dohuk-based task force, operating inside enemy territory, assembled for the purpose by the Prime Minister of Kurdistan. Several rehabilitation centers were opened for them in Dohuk by groups like the German NGO Wadi. Wadi is an NGO created in Germany in 1991. It became active in Iraq in 1993 and its mission is to help women in distress through psychological counseling and training in manual work to enable them to become independent. The Yazidis of Kurdish ethnic origin are a religious community who practice Yazidism, one of the oldest monotheistic religion in the world with similarities in somes ritual with Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Judaism as well as Mazdaism . They live mainly in the province of Nineveh in the north of Iraqi Kurdistan. Since 2014, they have been persecuted by the Islamic State, who regard them as devil worshippers.
