Traditional bread made from local chia seeds and the dates of native desert palm trees on the Torres Martinez Reservation are served at the annual traditional agave roast at the Malki Museum on the Morongo Indian Reservation near Banning, California, April 11, 2015. The agave plant, or amul in the local language, was a basic food staple for the Cahuilla and Kumeyaay Indians of Southern California. The agaves, which were harvested on traditional Cahuilla desert land in the Santa Rosa Mountains, were cooked in a traditional roasting pit and served with numerous other customary Native foods.
