Ruins Of Freiburg
A view of air raid damage in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau (now in the state of Baden-Württemberg), Germany, taken from the spire of Freiburg Minster after World War II, circa 1946. The city was heavily bombed in the war, notably in May 1940, when it was bombed in error by three Luftwaffe aircraft, killing 57, and in November 1944, when it was carpet-bombed by the Royal Air Force in a raid codenamed Operation Tigerfish, killing 2800. The Minster itself escaped serious damage. (Photo by Paul Popper/Popperfoto via Getty Images/Getty Images)
