The Portuguese Tourist Industry Prepares For Summer Visitors

This caf and restaurant, founded in 1905, is a favorite among tourists. It was a favored haunt of intellectuals and academics, including Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, who would regularly enjoy absinthe and a sweet ÔbicaÕ (coffee), while continuously smoking, reading or writing. A bronze statue of Fernando Pessoa, by sculptor Lagoa Henriques, was placed outside the caf in 1988 attracting tourists who pose for pictures sitting beside it. Although active all year round, Portuguese tourist industry is enjoying an excellent summer season, for the country is rated as very safe by travelers and vacationers.
