“Chikuwa Isobeage” Deep Fried Japanese Fishcake Delicatessen - stock photo
ちくわの磯辺揚げ 'Isobe' means 'Rocky Beachside' in Japanese, and 'Isobe-age' (磯辺揚げ) is a type of Tempura (天麩羅) made with the batter with a flavour of sea. Most commonly 'Aonori' (青海苔, Dried Green Laver Flakes) is added to the batter, but it might be difficult to find. Finely crumbled Nori, Hijiki, Wakame, or other Seaweed can be used. ‘Chikuwa’ (ちくわ, 竹輪) is a Japanese fishcake product made from fish surimi (すり身). After mixing them well, they are wrapped around a bamboo or metal stick and steamed or broiled. The word chikuwa comes from the shape when it is sliced.
