Ávila is best known for its intact medieval city walls. The fortifications of 82 semicircular towers and nine gates are the most complete in Spain. The 12th-century walls stretch for 2.5km atop the remains of earlier Roman and Muslim battlements and rank among the worlds best-preserved medieval defensive perimeters. Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
