The city of Mazagan was founded by the Portuguese in the beginning of 16th century. The tower in the center of fortress served as lighthouse till 1769 when Portugal abandoned the city. It was converted to minaret of nearby Grand Mosque when Moroccans repopulated the city in 19th century.
