Israeli police recruit massive number of Muslim officers

Arab Israelis during a class preparing Arab Muslims for tests to enter Israel's police academy at the Police Training Center in Kiryat Ata on 14 November 2016. The Israel Police has long had a poor relationship with Arab citizens who are underrepresented on the force, but over represented in crime statistics. Nevertheless, police data indicates a surge in Arab-Israeli interest in joining up as a result of a recruitment campaign targeting their communities with a 290% increase in résumé submission in the last year alone. Arab Muslims are currently 1.5 percent of the 30,000-member national police force, and the right-wing public security minister Gilad Erdan seeks to increase that number in three years by adding 1,350 new ones.
