Harold Macmillan becomes Prime Minister: Tom Driberg interviewed

Harold Macmillan becomes Prime Minister: Tom Driberg interviewed; ENGLAND: London: EXT Tom Driberg (Labour Party) interview SOF - Macmillan is a shrewd and able man in many ways but he has changed his general political outlook very much over the years, he does not now command the support of quite important sections of his Party, I don't think he can carry the party wholeheartedly with him / We feel that the new administration cannot get away with trying to blame Sir Anthony Eden alone for all the mess we are in, every leading minister in the new government shares the responsibility both for the Suez fiasco and the general economic difficulties / Government has a moral duty to the people of this country to give them the chance of making another choice [general election], surely the government mandate is exhausted, based on two claims, first peace abroad, second, prosperity and a steady lowering of the cost of living at home, they have failed hopelessly / Labour will fight them, evident that Conservative Party in parliament is deeply divided and unstable, yet another reason for a general election ... Government needs strong united party behind it, none of the leaders of the Conservative Party command a complete confidence of followers in the house, whereas on our side Hugh Gaitskell, Nye Bevan, Harold Wilson in recent months, their performance has excited the admiration even of many of their opponents, they can give the decisive forward looking leadership which the country desperately needs and which the world still expects / T/X 10.1.57 / 10.45pm
