HODA KOTB: It’s time for Sara in the City. This week, Sara Haines got a taste of a hip New York City hangout. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: That’s right. We hear that you turned your back on our drink of choice. HODA KOTB: How could you do that? SARA HAINES: Umm-- just for the day. I left my wine glass behind— KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You are cheating on us. SARA HAINES: I am. I headed to the Chelsea Brewery Company, the only microbrewery in Manhattan. And if can you believe that, they were kind enough to open their doors to this beer rookie. (Begin EJ) INT MS: Sign with writing “Chelsea Brewery Company Established 1996”. SARA HAINES: On the fourth hour, we definitely know our wine. But honestly, I don’t know much about beer. So today I’m at the Chelsea Brewing Company to learn a thing or two about the brew. INT MS: While speaking with Chelsea Brewery Company Header Brewer Mark Szmaida Haines says, “What does microbrewery mean? Because when I think of that, I always imagine a little building on a block. (Szmaida: Microbreweries are now anything below six million barrels a year, used to be two million barrels a year) So, it’s how much product you are turning out? (Szmaida: That’s right)”. INT MS: An unidentified brewer pours beer into a pitcher. MS: An unidentified brewer holds a glass of beer. SARA HAINES: While the brewery attitude is incredibly laidback. INT MS: While speaking with Szmaida Haines says, “What would you never eat with a beer? (Szmaida: There’s probably nothing I would never eat with a beer) Cereal? (Szmaida: Well, you put the beer in the cereal. I mean, yeah)”. SARA HAINES: The science behind the process is a bit more complicated. INT MS: Brewery equipment seen. CU: Brewer seen filling a pitcher. CU: Brewer seen pouring malt into a machine. PARTIAL VO: While speaking with Szmaida Haines says, “You pour the malt into that and it heats and then it evaporates and then it rains into a liquid form and then it drains through this thing and then it comes out and you flavor it with all these different hops. And then you stir it in a vat and then you bottle it and then you drink it. (Szmaida: Pretty close)”. MS: Haines adds hops to a metal barrel. MS: High-angle shot of liquid being added to the metal barrel. SARA HAINES: I got to taste some of the ingredients. INT CU: Szmaida hands Haines a small container of malt. PARTIAL VO: Haines smells the malt and says, “Ooh. (Szmaida: That were—) That smells like horse feed. (Szmaida: You can eat it, too. Just like horse feed. The enzymes in your mouth will start to make it sweet)”. MS: Haines tastes the malt and says, “Yeah, that’s not happening”. MS: High-angle of a large container of malt. PARTIAL VO: While speaking with Haines Szmaida says, “Hops give bitterness to beer. In the boil, you add hops. Depending on the style of beer, you add different varieties of hops”. CU: Haines helps to add hops to a metal barrel. CU: Various containers of hops seen. MS: While speaking with Szmaida Haines says, “What are hops?”. PARTIAL VO: While speaking with Haines Szmaida says, “Hops are a flower”. MS: Black and white filtered shot of Haines smelling Hops while standing next to Szmaida. PARTIAL VO: While speaking with Szmaida Haines says, “So these are all natural ingredients? (Szmaida: Yeah, pretty-- it’s pretty wholesome, you know, and you can get—) Well, it’s not a salad. Let’s not fool ourselves”. SARA HAINES: I did have to learn some new vocabulary. INT CU: Black and white filtered over-the-shoulder shot of Haines pouring a draft beer. MS: While speaking with Szmaida Haines says, “Does beer really taste different out of like a drought-- like the drought, like tap? (Szmaida: That’s draft, yeah—) It’s draft. (Szmaida: --draft beer, that’s all we make) Am I making language-- draft beer. (Szmaida: Yeah, draft beer)”. SARA HAINES: It was time for me to get acquainted with the sweet word. INT MS: Low-angle shot of Haines looking into the top of a large piece of brewing equipment. MS: High-angle shot of the interior of the brewing equipment as Haines can be heard saying, “Look at that”. SARA HAINES: The sugary liquid that later becomes beer. INT MS: While speaking with Haines Szmaida says, “This is an IPA, so it is going to be sweet and it’s going to be bitter because it has got a lot of hops in it already, so this is already in hops. (Haines: So, these are in hops, those pesky little hops) Yeah, yeah. For me, they are not pesky, for me, I-- I live for hops. (Haines: Did you smell those hops?) Yeah. (Haines: Couple of pesky ones in there)”. MS: Haines churns a mixture as Szmaida looks on and says, “You are pretty good at that”. SARA HAINES: I got to work the wort in the hot vat. Like a tea strainer for beer. INT MS: Side shot of Haines churning the wort. MS: Haines churns the wort next to Szmaida and says, “My wicked wort is being brewed”. SARA HAIENS: Finally, I graduated to the bar to try my hand at the tap. INT MS: Rear shot of Haines entering the bar. MS: Rear shot of Haines pouring a beer from the tap. MS: Haines speaks to a man off-camera saying, “Bruce (ph), I poured you a beer”. CU: Haines places the beer in front of the man. MS: While speaking with Bruce Haines says, “You are ninety-one? (Bruce: That’s correct) That was my first beer pour. How did I do? (Bruce: You did well) That’s a lie, Bruce”. SARA HAINES: I couldn’t leave the bar without giving a vocabulary quiz to a few loyal patrons. INT MS: Rear shot of Haines pouring a beer from the tap. MS: Haines pours a beer from the tap. CU: Haines holds up a pint of beer. MS: While speaking with unidentified patrons Haines says, “I have a question. When you order beer that’s not in a bottle or can, what is it called? (MAN #1: Draft beer) (MAN #2: Or on tap) So if I said, here’s your drought beer? (MAN #2: I wouldn’t even know-- I would just drink it without knowing what you were talking about. Yeah) (MAN #1: Drought when it’s-- when there is no water?)”. MS: While speaking with another unidentified patron Haines says, “I mistakenly called a draft beer a drought beer. (MAN #3: It’s definitely draft) (MAN #4: Definitely draft. Drought is like when there has been no rain)”. SARA HAINES: It was a tough crowd, but luckily Mark was still willing to share a pint at the end of it all. INT MS: Panning shot of various types of draft beers lined up on the bar. MS: Haines and Szmaida clink their beer glasses together at the bar as Haines says, “Cheers”. (End EJ) INT TODAY NEW YORK STUDIO SARA HAINES: And we’re going to share a little pint. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: All right. HODA KOTB: It comes like that. (Cross talking) KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You got to have it nice and cold. HODA KOTB: Look at that. SARA HAINES: Well, yeah, I’ve never seen this. HODA KOTB: A jug of beer. SARA HAINES: This is how I guess they distribute. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I like that. SARA HAINES: Do you want to drink straight out of our case you— (Cross talking) HODA KOTB: Oh. That would be good with-- that would be good with— KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: We’ll wait until commercial for me to do that. SARA HAINES: Hotdog, pizza. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: America doesn’t need to see that. HODA KOTB: All right. All right.
