Event Date(s): 04/29/2011, 10/17/2011 | Event Location(s): New York City, New York, London, United Kingdom | Description: INT TODAY SHOW STUDIO, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK Today Show anchors Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford discuss the Royal family, music, politics, and entertainment news KATHIE LEE GIFFORD, co-host: Hey, everybody, it is Funday Monday. It's October 17th. HODA KOTB, co-host: Oh! GIFFORD: Delighted that you're here with us. HODA KOTB, co-host: Today is my sister's birthday. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD, co-host: Happy birthday, Hala. KOTB: Happy birthday, Hala. Hoo! GIFFORD: She's in Dubai-bye. KOTB: She's in Dubai-bye. And she did send a little photograph. That's her. Party on, Hala. STILLS Photo of Kotb’s sister Hala standing next to flowers on a table GIFFORD: Yes, and she won't tell... KOTB: I know you're far away, but we love you. GIFFORD: She won't tell us how old she is, but Google her. KOTB: Who cares? Who cares? All right, so how was your weekend? GIFFORD: I don't remember it. I'm really running on fumes these... KOTB: It's a Seattle blur. GIFFORD: Yeah. I've been taking the red-eye back every--pretty much every week... KOTB: Uh-huh. GIFFORD: ...for about seven weeks now. KOTB: Yeah, you're on fumes. GIFFORD: Yeah. I'm on fumes. But I'm here, I got a pulse. I got a purpose. KOTB: And here's the thing. I was watching Channel 4, our NBC affiliate... GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: ...and up popped a promo of your show in Seattle and us going to Seattle and Carolee singing. GIFFORD: We're going to Seattle this week. KOTB: So they're really nice promos, so we're excited. GIFFORD: Oh, good. KOTB: So we leave--we'll be live Thursday and we... GIFFORD: Thursday from Seattle. KOTB: And we're going to do two shows Thursday. So people keep asking, `How do we get tickets?' I think you just come. GIFFORD: I don't think it's ticketed. You just show up at the Pike--at the market there on Pike Place Market, I think it's called. KOTB: Yes. Well... GIFFORD: It's a beautiful area. It's a great city. KOTB: Yes, it is a beautiful city. And you know what? GIFFORD: You had a big weekend. KOTB: I did. GIFFORD: Let's hear about your weekend? KOTB: My weekend was I have been dating Jay for one year. GIFFORD: You had your one-year anniversary. KOTB: Uh-huh, yeah. One-year anniversary. GIFFORD: Well, you've always said you need to... KOTB: That's our funny picture. STILLS Photo of Kotb with her boyfriend Jay GIFFORD: You need to have four seasons with someone. KOTB: Look how fuzzy that is. I'm not sure if it's because we're smashed or someone couldn't take our picture. GIFFORD: Where were you? KOTB: We went to a hotel nearby and did--I know. GIFFORD: I don't want to know what you did. KOTB: Wait, wait. GIFFORD: Well Jerry wants to know. KOTB: OK, he booked a massage for me that was to die for. You know when it's the kind of massage where the person is almost going to break your back and you'd rather die that way and you don't care? GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: It was incredible. So had great massages. We had... GIFFORD: It hurts so bad it's good. KOTB: Then I started laughing. When you're in pain then you start laughing like a crazy person, it's that kind of weird pain euphoria. GIFFORD: There was somebody in my room at the hotel like that last night. They were making those kinds of sounds, too, but I don't think a massage was going on. KOTB: Hello. GIFFORD: Hello. KOTB: And then we went to dinner. GIFFORD: So how do you feel? KOTB: Great. Great. I mean, it was just--it felt so natural and terrific. And I actually couldn't believe it had been a full year. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: We didn't really have our first date until two weeks from now, but we actually met at the book party this time last year. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: So... GIFFORD: Now you're working on your second book, which we'll talk about at another time. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: But I have a big anniversary coming up, too, tomorrow. KOTB: Ah, talk to me. GIFFORD: You've had one year of dating. KOTB: Yeah, what do you have? GIFFORD: As of tomorrow, I've had 25 years of marriage. It's a little different. KOTB: It is a little different. GIFFORD: I know. I don't remember what he looks like. I have not seen my husband and or my daughter or Bambino. KOTB: Oh, the Bambino. GIFFORD: Put up a picture of Bambino so I'll remember what he looks like. KOTB: We'll keep one handy. GIFFORD: Yeah, so--everybody's asking if Frank's coming out this week. KOTB: Yeah. And? GIFFORD: They all--yes, he'll--he's going to be there. He's going to be there. KOTB: So our whole show is going, we should point out. GIFFORD: Oh, we're going to do two shows there, it's so nice. KOTB: We are--yeah. So everybody's going. Frank's going. Who else? Lots of people. GIFFORD: My--Cassidy has one of the leads in the school play, so she can't. KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: Cody's recuperating from hurting himself out in California. KOTB: So he can't. GIFFORD: Yeah. But... KOTB: OK. But you'll have the big support system. GIFFORD: Yes! KOTB: We're going to have pom poms out, baby, for the big show. GIFFORD: You know who's not coming? KOTB: Who? Who? GIFFORD: She can't make it. Lady Gaga. KOTB: She's very busy, as you've seen. GIFFORD: Yeah. I'd like to know what our fans and friends out there think of her performance for President Clinton. KOTB: So here's the deal. Yeah, it was his initiative celebration. GIFFORD: Belated 65th birthday, right. KOTB: Yeah, let's listen. LADY GAGA: But, hey, having my first real Marilyn moment. I always wanted to have one, and I was hoping that I didn't yet involve an accident with some pills and a strand of pearls. So here we are. (Videotape of Lady Gaga performing) KOTB: Wait, wait, let's hear. I want to hear her perform to Bill and Hillary. Hold on. Here. (Videotape of Lady Gaga performing) KOTB: Here. So the song was "Bill Romance." GIFFORD: "Bad Romance" so she was saying... KOTB: She made "Bill Romance." GIFFORD: ..."Bill Romance." Yeah. So presi... KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: So presidential. KOTB: There was something--there was something a little bit--what'd you think? GIFFORD: I think--well, you know. KOTB: Icky? It was weird. GIFFORD: I... KOTB: I mean, first of all, she had the dress with the--with the you-know-whats... GIFFORD: Ta-tas. KOTB: ...out. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: And I don't know if that was part of the dress or what it was. GIFFORD: It was just--I don't think it was very respectful. I mean, she is an outrageous performer and she's a very talented girl, but I just--I don't know. I wouldn't--I guess Hillary didn't mind. She looks OK. INT MS: former President Bill Clinton clapping as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton smiles KOTB: She seemed to be whooping it up. GIFFORD: I don't know. I don't know. KOTB: Well, at the end, Bill Clinton said, `I'm the only former president to have Lady Gaga and the secretary of state at my birthday party.' You know, ha-ha-ha kind of thing. GIFFORD: He should keep his day job, because as a stand-up comedian he's not either. KOTB: Ba-dum-bum, baby. GIFFORD: Anyway, happy birthday, Mr. President. KOTB: Happy birthday. OK. So here's some--here's some good news. I guess some--the equality of the sexes is starting to work its way into the royal family in one respect. GIFFORD: This I think is a good thing. KOTB: It's a big deal. OK. So Prime Minister David Cameron is proposing to throw out those old ancient laws that say only boys can become the head of the throne. GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: OK? Now girls, too. So whether Kate and Will have a boy or a girl, that person, whoever it is, boy or girl, can elevate to the throne. So there you have it. STILLS Photo of Britain’s Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with others EXT DAY LONDON, ENGLAND 2011-04-29 MS: William and Catherine holding hands as they walk Side shot of William and Catherine holding hands as they walk MS: William saluting as he rides in a carriage with Catherine MS: William and Catherine waiving as they ride in a carriage MS: William and Catherine walking GIFFORD: As long as it's the first born. KOTB: Yeah, first born. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: So it could be the queen or a... GIFFORD: And if they only have one child anyway and it's a girl. KOTB: I think that's kind of cool. GIFFORD: That's the way it has been. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Yeah, yeah. OK. KOTB: But it's changing laws which date back to the 1700s, so it's going to--it's going to take a lot of untangling. It's a big deal to move into the modern age, I guess, with that. GIFFORD: Yeah, there's a big controversy over there, as well. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: A lot of--a lot of the British people love the monarchy... KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: ...and just as many seem to resent their tax dollars going towards their maintenance of them. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Especially when they don't act royally, you know. KOTB: Yeah, yes. Right. GIFFORD: So, I mean, that would bother me, too, if my tax dollars were going to, you know, some of the shenanigans. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: It's upsetting to watch all the money being spent. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: By the way, I'm still upset about my card. GIFFORD: Oh, did they know that you did this? KOTB: No. I was walking in Central Park and... GIFFORD: With Jay. KOTB: No, I was with actually Jane, my friend who's in town working on the book. GIFFORD: Oh, Jane. I thought you say Jay. KOTB: In my pocket I had my cell phone and a BlackBerry, both of them, and a card in between. So I must have pulled out the BlackBerry in Central Park, which, by the way, was mobbed with people. GIFFORD: Because it was a gorgeous weekend. KOTB: It--lots of walk-a-thons and things. And I guess it fell out somewhere. And then I went back looking for it because I was going to find the card in humongous Central Park with a kazillion people. GIFFORD: You are an optimist, Hoda. KOTB: Hey. It was nowhere. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I just called before I went on the show and they'd officially canceled it. GIFFORD: Canceled you. KOTB: That's such a pain because all your--my bills are paid--some of them paid from that card. So you have to redo that and change that and fix that, hm-hm-hm. I hate it. Speaking of cell phones, though, this is icky. GIFFORD: Yeah, this, this--you talk about this one. KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: I can't be trusted today. KOTB: So here's a cell phone and it's somebody else's. A British study says that one in six of these phones contain fecal matter. SARA HAINES reporting: Ew. KOTB: That's because... GIFFORD: What, Sara? KOTB: That's because people go to the bathroom--have you been in a public bathroom stall and heard someone in the stall on the phone? That's--they're on the phone in the stall and that's where it's coming from. In there. OK? GIFFORD: So it should be... KOTB: So you should take a wipe and wipe it down. But you know why? Even sometimes if you wash your hands in the bathroom... GIFFORD: Why am I washing somebody else's phone? KOTB: Because you're holding it and it's icky. GIFFORD: It's just... KOTB: But that's--so when you're borrowing someone's phone, think about it. `Can I use your phone?' GIFFORD: Because you know the looks people give you if you--if you walk out of a stall and you don't go to wash your hands? Not... KOTB: Why wouldn't you go? GIFFORD: Because lots of times you'll go into a stall to do something else. KOTB: Such as? HAINES: You still touch the door. GIFFORD: Excuse me, Sara! HAINES: Ew. KOTB: She said you still touch the door. But you're saying if you're adjusting a bra strap or doing things... GIFFORD: Yeah, you're adjusting your Spanx or putting something where it used to be... KOTB: ...whatever. GIFFORD: ...or something's, you know, not, you know? KOTB: So you don't think you should have to wash your hands in that situation. GIFFORD: Well, she has a good point, Sara. KOTB: The doors. GIFFORD: If you touch the door. Yeah, I guess so. KOTB: OK. By the way... GIFFORD: Why are we sitting here with the world's hugest... KOTB: Margarita. GIFFORD: Why not, is why we... KOTB: Because--OK, it's called the Lucky Rita. On October the 14th, Margaritaville, that's Jimmy Buffett's deal... GIFFORD: Yep. KOTB: ...broke the world record for the largest margarita. It was... GIFFORD: This isn't it. This is from it, right? KOTB: Yes, 8500 gallons. Not this one. Over that big one. GIFFORD: Over 31 feet tall. KOTB: Look at that guy. Thirty-one feet tall. GIFFORD: He is so fun. KOTB: It serves 131,000-plus people. Those are 12-ounce margaritas. And it's on display at Margaritaville off the Vegas Strip. Anyway, so they gave us a little taste. A tiny taste. STILLS Photo of people holding their arms up next to a large margarita GIFFORD: And $5 from every gallon sold is going to go to the Wounded Warriors amputee softball team. KOTB: Very nice. GIFFORD: So three's another--just another good reason. There you go. KOTB: Good reason. Mm. GIFFORD: Now, Las Vegas is one of the unluckiest cities in the world, apparently. KOTB: Yeah. One of these magazines, Men's Health, decided to find out what was the luckiest and least lucky cities. Anyway, they based it on three things: people getting holes in one on golf courses, people getting hit by lightning, and... GIFFORD: Which is not lucky. KOTB: ...and getting hit from falling objects. GIFFORD: I mean you chances of it, yeah. KOTB: Right. And people winning the lottery. That's the criteria. OK, so the luckiest cities based on just those things... GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: ...are: Richmond, Virginia is number five... GIFFORD: Mm-hmm. KOTB: ...Wilmington, Delaware number four. Number three is Phoenix, Arizona. GIFFORD: Yep. GFX: Luckiest Cities In America KOTB: Number two Baltimore, Maryland. And the luckiest city in the country, according to this magazine, is San Diego, California, because they get more holes in one, least people hit by lightning and people keep winning the lottery apparently there. GIFFORD: And it's sunshine about 300 days out of the--out of the year, and it's absolutely gorgeous there. KOTB: Yes. Here are the least... GIFFORD: And I like that the airport is so close to downtown. KOTB: Yes. And the weather's always perfect, you're right. GIFFORD: And, you know, it's just--yeah, there's no reason in the world not to love San Diego. KOTB: Here are the least lucky cities in--Sioux Falls, Sooth Dakota is number five. GIFFORD: Why? It's a beautiful place. KOTB: Because nobody's winning the lottery, nobody plays golf, and, you know the rest. Number four is Memphis, Tennessee, again. Number three, Jackson, Mississippi... GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: ...the least lucky. Number two, Tampa, Florida. GFX: Least Lucky Cities In America GIFFORD: And the least likely--least lucky place in the entire country is... GIFFORD and KOTB: (In unison) ...Charleston, West Virginia. KOTB: Apparent... GIFFORD: Now people are watching there right now and going, `We don't feel unlucky. We love it here.' KOTB: They must have a lot of lightning strikes in Charleston. GIFFORD: I don't... KOTB: I mean, that's all we can figure. GIFFORD: All righty. KOTB: Talk to me. GIFFORD: Talk to you. It's--we have our favorite things today. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: And I wanted to tell you about this last week but I had packed them and couldn't--OK. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: I love Laura Mercier products. KOTB: Sure. GIFFORD: They're fairly priced and they're--when I get up and run out--I don't like to put on makeup to go out and run... KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: ...but I also need some sunscreen. So this one is the tinted moisturizer... KOTB: Ooh. Like it. GIFFORD: ...with an SPF of 20. It's oil free, but I just have to show you, it's got the most beautiful coverage. KOTB: The way--coloring, yeah. MS: Gifford placing sunscreen on her hand GIFFORD: Because--and it just goes on very, very lightly. KOTB: It's sheer. GIFFORD: And it's got a sheen to it, but it's just natural and beautiful. KOTB: I love it, love it. GIFFORD: And then this other one is just a primer for your skin that you put on right before you do your makeup... KOTB: Under. GIFFORD: ...regular makeup, and it makes it look like a matte. KOTB: I love the coloring. GIFFORD: It's beautiful. Yep, yep. What you got? KOTB: It's beautiful. All right, here's mine. There is a guy who is one of the... GIFFORD: Ricardo Medina. KOTB: ...guys who drives around here, his name is Ricardo Medina. He's one of the drivers who drives people to stories and things like that at NBC. He stops at different places while he's waiting for his customers and takes photos of what he sees, and he put it in a book and on a website. This is in the subway platform. We have some different photos, we can click through them kind of quickly. But they have like such great... STILLS Photo of a girl leaning against a wall with a mural on it Photo of the top of a bridge seen in clouds Photo of a driving bus GIFFORD: So he's a--always... KOTB: No. He stops on the... GIFFORD: Oh, he's an amateur or professional? KOTB: He's an amateur photographer. GIFFORD: Wow, these are beautiful. KOTB: Wait. Look at some of these. I don't know if you have them on still store... GIFFORD: Wow. KOTB: ...but these are like some great--imagine he's waiting for people, just waiting for someone to come out of a meeting and he takes... GIFFORD: Look at these. They're works of art. KOTB: ...I mean, they're pictures. We got them up there. Gorgeous. But isn't that... GIFFORD: They're beautiful. KOTB: He doesn't waste time. He's like you. He does not waste time. Look at this one, a bus just going by. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I mean, it's--they're beautiful. Look, some of the pictures are really great. Anyway... GIFFORD: So can--some people can purchase those? KOTB: Ricardo Medina. You can go on a website. It's ricardomedina.com. We'll have it on our website so you guys can find it. Also, you can go buy the book for 42 bucks. But--and he's a nice, nice man, too. GIFFORD: Well, that was sweet. Good. KOTB: Sara: GIFFORD: All right, Sara. HAINES: That is sweet, because in addition to not wasting your time, it's neat that he finds inspiration while he's sitting there. KOTB: Yeah, he sure does. HAINES: Like, that's cool. But I always love a good read, and most recently I read Lisa See's books. GIFFORD: Mm-hmm. HAINES: Have you ever heard of this? "Shanghai Girls" and "Dreams of Joy." KOTB: No. GIFFORD: Unh-unh. HAINES: I'm actually reading a third one by her. She just--it was just a good fictional read with some historical content... KOTB: Yeah. HAINES: ...in there. But she creates such good characters. I'm so into these. KOTB: OK. Oh, good. HAINES: So if you want a good book...(holds up books). KOTB: Thank you. GIFFORD: All righty. KOTB: Thanks, hon. GIFFORD: So Stephen Lang is here. You know, I watched this morning. KOTB: Uh-huh. GIFFORD: I have not seen it, "Terra Nova," the new series.
