Event Location(s): Today New York Studio | Description: Geist, Roker, Morales and Hall report from the Today New York Studio. WILLIE GEIST: Welcome to TODAY on Wednesday morning, April 9, 2014. I’m Willie Geist along with Al Roker, Natalie Morales, and Tamron Hall. We’ve got some big news to get to right out of the gate here. Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, multiple people have been stabbed. It happened this morning. We don’t have numbers in yet. We know it took place in multiple hallways-- NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. WILLIE GEIST: --multiple classrooms. This is a high school about fifteen miles outside of Pittsburgh. NATALIE MORALES: Right. There’s a-- WILLIE GEIST: The suspect is in custody. And a hospital spokesperson said victims range from age fifteen to age sixty. And again, multiple, we don’t have the number as yet. NATALIE MORALES: And it sounds right now that the situation is contained because as we mentioned there is a custody-- a suspect in custody as we speak. But students being taken to various hospitals right now, seven to eight students. And we don’t know the extent of the injuries. But we’re following any developments on the story and we’ll bring them to you. AL ROKER: Given that age range, probably either teacher-- WILLIE GEIST: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: Teacher, staff. WILLIE GEIST: Yes. AL ROKER: --or staff involved as well. NATALIE MORALES: Absolutely. You can imagine. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. Again, a stabbing at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, outside Pittsburgh. We’ll stay on this story and bring you more updates as we get them for you. Meanwhile, there are new clues in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Overnight, Australian search coordinators announced their ship Ocean Shield was able to reacquire the ping signal on two occasions and has now detected four transmissions from the same general area. Search leaders say they are now confident the signals come from a manmade device and it’s consistent with the locator on a black box, but they do need to detect even more pings to narrow the area. Again, guys this took place in one of those remote areas of the Indian Ocean,-- NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. WILLIE GEIST: --at fifteen thousand feet. The challenge is huge right there. NATALIE MORALES: Like, three miles getting there. WILLIE GEIST: The -- The Washington Post put this into perspective for us. The Empire State Building stands twelve hundred fifty feet. AL ROKER: Wow. WILLIE GEIST: The maximum known depth a sperm whale can dive is thirty-two hundred. The Titanic was at twelve thousand five hundred feet. AL ROKER: Hm. WILLIE GEIST: They found Air France 447 thirteen thousand feet down. And again, we’re talking about fifteen thousand feet if this is indeed the plane. Very difficult to recover. And also, it’s been almost a month now. AL ROKER: True. NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. AL ROKER: And-- and there’s no guarantee that’s flat surface. WILLIE GEIST: Right. AL ROKER: It could-- a volcanic area, so it could be in a crevice, a valley, anything like that. So it-- it really-- besides the actual topography of the ocean, the depth is going to really cause big problems. TAMRON HALL: And officials today said the ping is faint-- NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. TAMRON HALL: --and that obviously is a concern. Even though the experts who make the black box say that in many cases it can extend past thirty days. The search teams out today or overnight say that it was a faint ping, far fainter than what they heard-- far more faint than what they heard before, so. AL ROKER: True. NATALIE MORALES: And the most positive news was that you heard from an Australian official today, though, that they feel somewhat confident-- WILLIE GEIST: Right. AL ROKER: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: Right. NATALIE MORALES: --this time around, that they actually have perhaps the biggest breakthrough yet. So, fingers crossed that they actually find something. WILLIE GEIST: Every time we get one of these shreds of information,-- NATALIE MORALES: Right. TAMRON HALL: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: --I just think about these families again-- TAMRON HALL: Uh. AL ROKER: Oh. WILLIE GEIST: --thinking oh, maybe this is it. Maybe this is it. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: Even if it’s not a rescue, it’s a recovery, it’s something for them. AL ROKER: Closure. TAMRON HALL: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: Some closure. WILLIE GEIST: Something. Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: At least it’s, you know, the beginning of trying to understand what actually happened. WILLIE GEIST: Right. AL ROKER: But there still could be months. I mean it-- NATALIE MORALES: Could be years before we know what happens. AL ROKER: They said it could be-- yeah, at least a month before they-- if this is the area that they recover-- just recover the black boxes. NATALIE MORALES: Right. WILLIE GEIST: Yes. Yes. AL ROKER: So, yeah. NATALIE MORALES: And then analyzing that data,-- AL ROKER: Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: --assuming they find it-- AL ROKER: Right. NATALIE MORALES: --is going to take a long, long time to put it all together. Well, on to some good news. And we saw just the most adorable baby video/photos you can possibly imagine. William, Kate, and Prince George in New Zealand on their three-week visit to New Zealand and Australia. Having a little play date. The Prince enjoying, you know, time with ten other babies and their parents as they mingled there. Of course, the other babies don’t even know who he is. WILLIE GEIST: Right. Not impressed. TAMRON HALL: Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: And don’t steal his toys from him. But the baby is all about eight months old. And just look at those cheeks and those little thighs. AL ROKER: Can you imagine if your baby got really fight with-- with Prince George. NATALIE MORALES: Oh. TAMRON HALL: He might lose. That kid is big. Apparently all of the babies selected were born around the same time as the prince. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: But look at his size in comparison. Look at the little arms. WILLIE GEIST: He’s a boy. TAMRON HALL: And his head. I mean he’s got-- WILLIE GEIST: He’s a boy. NATALIE MORALES: My-- my kids were like that-- AL ROKER: Such a royal hood. NATALIE MORALES: They-- they were kind of chunky monkeys, my kids as well. But what’s interesting, when-- when the royals did arrive there, I don’t know if you guy saw the picture when Kate stepped off the plane, there was a slight wardrobe malfunction as she visited down under, quite literally. WILLIE GEIST: Wow. Hey, now. AL ROKER: Wow. WILLIE GEIST: Hey, now. AL ROKER: You went there. WILLIE GEIST: There it is. AL ROKER: You went there. NATALIE MORALES: Well, you know-- AL ROKER: Dark Natalie is back. WILLIE GEIST: She’s back. NATALIE MORALES: It sells itself. AL ROKER: Oh, we missed you. WILLIE GEIST: Welcome back dark Natalie. AL ROKER: Missed you. NATALIE MORALES: Every once in a while I bring her out just for you guys. AL ROKER: Thank you very much. WILLIE GEIST: By the way, can you imagine the stress of being one of the other parents? TAMRON HALL: Hm. WILLIE GEIST: It’s-- play dates are hard enough. AL ROKER: Oh, yeah. NATALIE MORALES: I know. WILLIE GEIST: The baby’s like, don’t punch the royal baby. TAMRON HALL: Oh. AL ROKER: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: Please don’t punch the royal baby. Don’t throw a fire truck at the royal baby. That’s a lot. TAMRON HALL: See-- I see it the other way. If you’re the parents, Kate and Will, you don’t want the royal baby to hit the other kid-- NATALIE MORALES: Right. WILLIE GEIST: Well-- right. TAMRON HALL: --because people say, oh, look at this privileged kid. WILLIE GEIST: Right, right. NATALIE MORALES: He hit babies. TAMRON HALL: The prince is a bully, you know. AL ROKER: There you go. There you go. All right. Okay. So one of our faves-- TAMRON HALL: Yes. AL ROKER: --Batkid is back. WILLIE GEIST: Batkid. NATALIE MORALES: Love him. AL ROKER: Love Batkid. Five-year-old Miles Scott, a kindergartener who is in remission from leukemia came to public attention last November when San Francisco, the Make-A-Wish Foundation threw a celebration for this young boy. One of the most elaborate Make-A-Wish events ever. NATALIE MORALES: He’s awesome. AL ROKER: Folks dressed as the comic book characters The Riddler and The Penguin. NATALIE MORALES: So cool. AL ROKER: Well, guess what, entering San Francisco Giants Park, AT&T Park in a Batmobile painted Lamborghini. Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: Nice. WILLIE GEIST: Wow. AL ROKER: It is Bruce Wayne, let’s face it. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: He’s riding in style. AL ROKER: He’s a multi-millionaire. NATALIE MORALES: That's the way he travels, right. AL ROKER: That’s right. He threw out the first pitch before the San Francisco Giants’ home opener. And the pitch -- all right, way to go, young man. NATALIE MORALES: Nicely done. AL ROKER: That is fantastic. NATALIE MORALES: He’s so great. TAMRON HALL: Oh, I love it. NATALIE MORALES: I think he should come visit us on the plaza. AL ROKER: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: He is so cool. NATALIE MORALES: Bring his Lamborghini here. AL ROKER: Yeah. WILLIE GEIST: That’s a heck of bullpen car. You know in the ‘80s the Yankees had like the pinstripe Dodge. AL ROKER: Right. TAMRON HALL: Right. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. WILLIE GEIST: They drive, (Unintelligible) out. AL ROKER: Oh, yeah. WILLIE GEIST: A Lamborghini? AL ROKER: That’s not bad. TAMRON HALL: Right. But that’s only for him. NATALIE MORALES: Sweet drive. WILLIE GEIST: That’s the next level. TAMRON HALL: Only for him. WILLIE GEIST: That’s for him. NATALIE MORALES: Sweet drive. AL ROKER: Wow. TAMRON HALL: That’s for him. AL ROKER: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: It’s his ride. I love that. AL ROKER: I would have gone in a Dodge Dart. TAMRON HALL: Oh, gosh. Well, something else to talk about this morning-- AL ROKER: Your allergies are really bothering you. TAMRON HALL: You know, yeah. WILLIE GEIST: It’s the studio. TAMRON HALL: It’s so weird. Every time I start work-- every time I start work. AL ROKER: Have we got a tissue? Got a tissue for Miss Hall? TAMRON HALL: I know. My eyes start to run. And it’s been going on. WILLIE GEIST: A little tissue? TAMRON HALL: And I don’t know what’s happening to me. NATALIE MORALES: Should do like an air allergy test. TAMRON HALL: I think it’s what happens after I turn forty. AL ROKER: Let me see. Maybe there’s something back here. TAMRON HALL: I got allergies. Seriously it’s crazy. Al is getting me some tissue. Thank you. AL ROKER: Any tissue? TAMRON HALL: And what we don’t want to have to happen. WILLIE GEIST: Anyone have tissue? No. AL ROKER: Tissue? WILLIE GEIST: No one. Okay. AL ROKER: Tissue? TAMRON HALL: Willie, we were talking you said-- NATALIE MORALES: Tissue? You order a tissue? AL ROKER: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: --we were talking about the fact that I do my won makeup and what I’m afraid of right now is this eyelash is coming off. WILLIE GEIST: Oh-Oh. AL ROKER: Oh, no. Oh, no. WILLIE GEIST: Oh, no. Want me to take retail baby for you here? TAMRON HALL: Yes. AL ROKER: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: I feel like -- I got it. Just know that if anyone tweets a picture of me out with my eyelash off,-- AL ROKER: Oh, no. TAMRON HALL: --I will never talk to you again. WILLIE GEIST: No. It’s there? AL ROKER: Where is-- WILLIE GEIST: You’re good. AL ROKER: Is it Nat around-- TAMRON HALL: Okay. AL ROKER: Is Nat here? TAMRON HALL: Never mind. AL ROKER: I wonder our-- TAMRON HALL: Okay. So here’s a story, listen, while I worried about this is nothing. Some mom right now is worried about the fact that she’s going to have to go shopping today, run a few errands with a toddler or an infant in tow. But, don’t you worry. Apparently a new study out says that there’s a benefit of retail therapy for babies. NATALIE MORALES: I like this. TAMRON HALL: This according to the New Oxford University study. The research found that shopping trips can actually help a child’s development as much as painting. A lot of these art clubs are very popular right now. NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. TAMRON HALL: Or even drawing activities. Shopping was also found to develop a child’s motor skill because they’re pointing out, mom, don’t wear that. You look great in those jeans. And social skills, because they’re chatting it up with all of the employees who think your kid is cute. I added that in. NATALIE MORALES: Hm. TAMRON HALL: Anyway, a story in New York magazine also joked so when your infant’s friends are all headed to a fancy art camp, hold your head high knowing that he went to Forever 21, and that will equally enrich that child’s life. So-- NATALIE MORALES: My kids hate shopping with me. AL ROKER: My child. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: Yeah. AL ROKER: No. WILLIE GEIST: No. NATALIE MORALES: There is no way. AL ROKER: No. TAMRON HALL: Well, I don’t think the study said they enjoy it. It’s good for their socialization. NATALIE MORALES: It’s good for them? WILLIE GEIST: Right. TAMRON HALL: They may hate it. They may cry. NATALIE MORALES: They didn’t see it that way. TAMRON HALL: You shouldn’t feel that you have to apologize for bringing your child because you’re actually socializing your child. AL ROKER: You’re traumatizing your child. NATALIE MORALES: I’m going to use that now. WILLIE GEIST: I think-- TAMRON HALL: You think so? AL ROKER: Yes. No kid wants to go-- no child wants-- TAMRON HALL: Right. AL ROKER: --voluntarily wants to go shopping with mom. This extended from my family all the way to my teen years. My father-- TAMRON HALL: Right. AL ROKER: --you know, for me to get the-- the car for the-- for the evening,-- TAMRON HALL: Yeah. AL ROKER: --I would have to take my mother shopping. TAMRON HALL: Okay. But riddle me this. No kid wants to go to school. AL ROKER: Well, you’re the Riddler. TAMRON HALL: With Batman. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. TAMRON HALL: No, I mean this Batman. WILLIE GEIST: Batkid. TAMRON HALL: No kid wants to go to school. You still make them go. So if the benefit is that the child becomes more socially aware-- AL ROKER: Oh, shopping, school? Wait a minute. NATALIE MORALES: I think they are more social doing many other things. TAMRON HALL: I’m thinking about my kid one day, my fashionista. NATALIE MORALES: A play date is much more social than shopping. WILLIE GEIST: I want to know-- TAMRON HALL: I’m just telling you what the study says that-- NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. TAMRON HALL: --you know, don’t feel bad. This is it. AL ROKER: Again, this is from Oxford. Okay. NATALIE MORALES: I will use that study. WILLIE GEIST: Yeah. I think-- AL ROKER: One of those-- those British. Oh, come on. The Brits. Come on. NATALIE MORALES: All I know is-- WILLIE GEIST: Oxford not good enough for, Al. AL ROKER: Oxford not good enough. NATALIE MORALES: It helps my case. It helps my case when I want to shop, Al. That’s all I’m saying. WILLIE GEIST: There you go. TAMRON HALL: That’s what I say. You just-- AL ROKER: No. WILLIE GEIST: Their motor skills. AL ROKER: Do not do that to your children. (Cross talking) TAMRON HALL: -- with you and you pointed to people. Read the article. AL ROKER: I’m begging you, don’t do it. GFX: Graphic map showing Murrysville, Pennsylvania.
