Peter Mandelson resigns from Cabinet; ENGLAND: London: Downing Street: EXT Outgoing Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson MP from Number 10 PAN as across to mikes and speaking to press SOT - I am today resigning from the government / I do not accept in anyway that I have acted improperly in respect of any application for naturalisation as a British subject / Talks of incorrect information being given to House (of Commons) by Culture Secretary Chris Smith MP as a reuslt of a reply I gave to The Observer newspaper / I accept responsibility (for the press and Parliament being misled) / I have said to the Prime Minister that I wish to leave the government and he has accepted that / I had not sought to influence the decision on naturalisation in any way at all, merely to pass on a request for information / Must be more to politics than the constant media pressure and exposure that has dogged me over the last 5 or so years / I want to remove myself from all the stories that have surrounded me / I want to lead a more normal life both in politics and, in the future, outside / Hopes that all he and the parties in Northern Ireland have worked for comes to pass / Thanks people of Northern Ireland for their support Mandelson across to car and in PAN TX 24.1.2001/C4N
