Event Date(s): 05/22/2007 | Event Location(s): Today New York Studio;New York City, New York; | Description: EJ: 8:20:34 (1:27) INT NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK MS: In interview in his office New York Eye and Ear Infirmary's Dr. Richard Rosen looks at a computer screen showing a picture of a dilated pupil. CU: The dilated pupil image. MS: In interview Rosen says (part VO)"This is a picture of an eye. The pupil is dilated and the lens in this eye has a cataract. So instead of having a nice clear window the light is actually reflecting on the surface. And you can see that they're these sort of cracks which interfere with the transmission of light to the back of the eye." MS: Image of an eye with different sections of the eye highlighted. GFX: Eye with a highlighted macula area. INT MS: Finger (faces unseen) points to enlarged image of an eye with a highlighted Macula section of the eye with yellow accumulations around it. MS: Rosen says (part VO)"Here's the macula in the eye of a patient who has early dry macular degeneration. It's got all these yellow accumulations. Most people experience it as a loss of the central vision. That's why it's such a devastating disease because they see sort of a gray spot centrally. About 90 percent of macular degeneration is dry. And about 10 per cent will go on to developing the wet form." EXT DAY MS: Crowd of people walk down sidewalk as GFX gray spot is seen in the center of the screen. INT MS: Enlarged image of an eye with dry macular degeneration and highlighted protein deposits and highlighted new blood vessels. GFX SUPER:"Drusen = protein deposits" INT MS: In interview (part VO) Rosen says"Okay, so here's a picture of a patient who had dry macular degeneration. You can see the protein deposits, the Drusen that are here. And the patient has gone on to develop some new blood vessels. So this is a spot of blood which is covering part of their macula. We know that we are given a certain genetic background which predisposes and there are certain things that play into it - high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high fat in diet. But by controlling that and by adding certain anti-oxidants seems to slow the disease." EXT DAY MS: People walk at an outdoor fruit and vegetable market. MS: Salad is picked up with tongs.
