(07:01:00) John Palmer reports from White House that during interview with five major newspapers President Ronald Reagan delivered his toughest assessment of the way Jimmy Carter handled the hostage crisis. Reagan felt Carter was on the wrong track from the start and shouldn't have negotiated with the Iranian kidnappers; he should have treated the hostage taking as an act of war. (07:37:00) Pauley interviews"Sportsman of the Week" Eric Heiden via x-talk from WTHR-TV studio in Indianapolis. Last night Heiden was awarded James E. Sullivan Amateur Athlete of the Year Award. The latter won him the New York Film Critics and National Society of Film Critics awards for best screenplay. Goldman says he relates to Melvin Dummar, a loser for years, but happy because he knows that wife and family are what's really important, not just fame and money. Goldman's wife ran a fish store while he toiled at writing. He notes Howard Hughes was one of the world's most successful and unhappiest men. To write"Melvin& Howard," he traveled with Dummar for a month and met his family. Goldman says the thread connecting his characters is anger and vulnerability. He's presently writing"Shoot the Moon." Hunter says the insurance industry is huge, makes high profits, is slow to pay claims, and gives insufficient information to consumers for competition. Bernstein says what's important is that the insurance companies have enough to pay claims. He says insurance companies are strictly regulated in all 50 states and that more money is paid in claims than comes in as premiums. Bernstein says insurance companies need investment profits as cushion against claims and points to Hurricane Frederick which cost insurance co's $800 Million. Hunter points out the GAO says there's significant improvement needed and the federal gov't should set standards for state regulation. (08:37:00) Rona Barrett reports on news in the entertainment industry, including David Letterman signing with NBC. (08:49:00) Nancy Foreman interviews Bruno Caliandro of the Bank Street College of Education and associate publisher of"3 To Get Ready," a Sunday newspaper supplement aimed at children.
