(08:17:00)"Donahue on Today" - Phil Donahue looks at"tough love" technique for dealing with problem kids. Jule Tibola says they discovered theft of their silver by son to pay for his drug habit, so they told him he couldn't live with them anymore. John Tibola, 18 year old son, says he felt rejected but understood they couldn't have him in the house. He now lives with friends and is rebuilding a relationship with his parents. Jule believes you feel guilty when you do it, but had to do it to save the family. Jim Stranger locked out his two runaway daughters, 12& 14 years old. They'd disappeared for two days and told them they couldn't come back unless on his terms. They'd been getting drunk, using pot, being violent to their mother. Tough Love therapist Phyllis York says their agency helps these families. They're action oriented. Parents aren't wrong when they say to kids"you can't live in our house if you're going to live like a pig." Donahue notes she seems to absolve the parents. York says the parents are good and loving. They do absolve them of guilt, but tender loving care is not always worth it. When children behave visciously, they don't deserve positive self-esteem. (08:37:00) Rona Barrett reports from Hollywood on latest news in the entertainment industry. (08:42:00) Gene Shalit interviews actor Michael O'Keefe, nominated for Oscar as supporting actor for role in"The Greta Santini." He discusses his career, and rapid climb to success at age 25. Clip from movie shown. Interview ends with O'Keefe juggling three orange golf balls. (08:50:00) Betty Furness in studio reports on study by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested repair costs for subcompact cars in low speed crashes. Ford Escort total repairs in 10 mph crash were $815; Mustang $995; Chrysler Reliant K $1001; Toyota Tercel $1895. Clips of crash tests shown. Furness notes Ford is actually exceeding required standards. Evidence shows that American small cars are safer and cheaper to repair than foreign cars. Auto ad men used to say that safety doesn't sell, but they were the same ones who said Americans would never buy small cars. It's time they try to advertise safety. (08:54:00) Mike Leonard reports from Eaton Rapids, Michigan on unconventional special education program for slower students. They have an ice cream parlor that the kids run themselves. One student says he's better in math now because he has to make change. Principal Richard Blatt says in working in the ice cream parlor students learn punctuality, how to interact with others, and they pick up life skills. Special ed teacher Judy Collins says the students working in the ice cream parlor have a better attitude towards themselves and others in school have a better attitude towards them."Willard Scott Super Special" ice cream dish shown. Hit times approximate. Not screened. Info from Program Analysis cards.
