Alistair Darling MP (Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, 2007-2010) LIVE 2-WAY interview from London SOT
- We were led to believe today was day we'd get something of substance, look back at 2008 when banking system came within hours of collapse, the announcement we made worked because it had numbers, specifics, we could implement it very quickly, what is missing is detail on what exactly eurozone is going to do to make sure we can solve Greece's problems once and for all, debt write-down, other measures too ... to get growth going again, we need numbers for recapitalisation of banks ... On the rescue fund at the moment it is all pretty vague, both on amount and how is that money being put together ...
- The Italian difficulty is slightly different, people are worried about lack of growth in Italy ... Not only have we not got a decisive package that is designed to exceed market expectations ... but underlying problem throughout Europe and affecting our own economy is that growth has been squeezed out of the system, our economy was growing 12 months ago, it's not growing now, if you don't get growth you can't get the deficit down ... If you go for austerity first and foremost ... private sector doesn't come to take its place, then growth simply doesn't happen, borrowing goes up
- .... If you want a single currency then you have to have something approaching a political union, fiscal policy that works for all 17 member states, rich countries helping the poorer countries, euro-bonds ... that's not even on the table tonight ...
