Jakarta reimposes restrictions as virus cases spike in past 2 months

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - SEPTEMBER 14: The administration of Indonesia’s capital city Jakarta has decided to re-impose virus quarantine starting Monday (September 14) as the number of coronavirus cases keeps rising in the capital city. Main streets, shopping malls, and stores were less crowded on Monday as the city began two weeks of social restrictions. Jakarta Gov. Anies Baswedan announced the restrictions Sunday, to last from Monday to Sept. 27, to combat a virus outbreak he called an emergency. Social, economic, religious, cultural, and academic activities have been restricted, with 11 essential sectors, like food, construction, and banking, allowed to operate with health protocols and 50% of usual staffing levels. But restaurants and cafes are not allowed to accept dine-in customers. While schools remain closed since March, authorities said under the second large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), tourist attractions and venues entertainment are closed and mass gathering is prohibited, while houses of worship can only be opened to residents. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, a police official, said there was no significant change in traffic on the first day of quarantine. Yogo said the traffic in the capital's main roads were filled with more private vehicles compared to last week. On the other hand, the number of train passengers dropped by 19% compared to last week. The metropolitan city currently has more than 12,000 active cases, with new infections increased to 15% in the past week, while the fatality rate rose 17% in September, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The number of active cases in Jakarta climbed by 48% from late August to early September, the data said.
