NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 19, 2020: The death of George Perry Floyd Jr. - an African-American man who was killed by police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020 – has sparked protest worldwide. On the holiday JUNETEENTH youth from ‘The Gathering for Justice’ rally promoting their campaign to ‘End the War on Children’ in celebration of the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. They rallied on the steps of Manhattan’s Tweed Courthouse and marched in downtown Manhattan demanding Police Free schools, the Defunding the Police (the NYPD) and More Counselors in Schools. Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. Per the organizations mission statement: “[The] mission is to build a movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate the racial inequities that permeate the justice system.” Manhattan, New York City, USA.
