Tragic story of Iraqi migrant who is stranded at Belarus-Poland border

GRODNO REGION, BELARUS - NOVEMBER 11 / SULAYMANIYAH, IRAQ - NOVEMBER 11: Thousands of irregular migrants have been stranded in freezing cold on the Belarus-Poland border for the fourth day amid the geopolitical standoff in eastern Europe. They are facing desperate conditions, hoping to cross onto EU soil. After crossing the Bruzgi border point in Grodno, Belarus, on Monday, the immigrants – most of them from Iraq – have been waiting at the Polish border. Nearly 2,000 immigrants, including women and children, are staying in tents despite the cold weather and shortage of food, water, and medical assistance. One of the migrants, an Iraqi Kurdish Nabil Medri Majid who has been trapped between Belarussian and Polish border guards sent a video to Anadolu Agency Video News on Thursday (Nov. 11). Majid received a master's degree in international relations from a University in Russia. Then he returned to the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, but he could not find any job. He went to Erbil and opened a tea house. However the money he earned could only be enough for the rent of the shop. Nabil set out last October to leave the country for a better life in Europe. Deceived by human smugglers, with thousands of other desperate irregular migrants, he ended up at the Belarus-Poland border. Speaking to Anadolu Agency Video News on Thursday in Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, Nabil's elder brother Beshdar Medri Majid said his brother graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences of Sulaymaniyah University and then received a master's degree in Russia with his own budget and limited opportunities without any scholarship. The elder brother showed Nabil’s diplomas and certificates to the AAVN reporter. Nabil’s mother Hatija Ali Abdullah said Nabil was considering fleeing the country, but she could not stand against her son's decision. (Footage by Stringer/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
