Arthur Charles Clarke (b 1917) was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research. Here, he is using a wireless crystal set for one of his early experiments in communications. He was taught how to build these by his uncle, a communications engineer, and the components could be bought for a shilling. Arthur is surrounded by experimental equipment.
