TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY MARINE VEITH --- eThekwini Water Services representative Lucky Sibiya stands next to one of the many dry toilets with a urine separation unit in Umzinyathi, some 56 kilometres south of Durban on October 21, 2010. The city of Durban wants to buy urine from its citizens; the reason: to overcome the reluctancy of people to use dry toilets, which were installed by the town hall in poor areas. The project aims to improve sanitation and the recycling of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is providing a grant to support this joint project by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG) and the eThekwini and Sanitation Utility (EWS).
